Robots have, as all aspects of our society, infiltrated the sex work industry. Sex robots have arisen, that look, feel and moan just like a human.
During our research into sex work and its relation to robots, we found out people who regularly visit prostitutes often keep coming back to the same one. It turns out these men develop a personal relationship with the prostitute and often care about them as a person outside of the sexual part. It seems as though what these men are looking for is not just sex, but a genuine connection.
That personal aspect can never be replaced by a sex robot. Robots can mimic emotion, but they can never show empathy the way a human can. What is a sex robot then, if not merely a machine for pleasure? Like a coffee machine?
“Het koffieseksapparaat” (Coffee sex machine) presents a coffee machine. To make the coffee, you have to have sex with it. It is presented as a sex robot. With this machine, we wanted to visualise the absurdity of trying to find love and connection within a sex robot. There is nothing human about the coffee sex machine, but it serves pleasure just like a prostitute.
if you want pleasure, find it in a human instead.
